This is the magic sword of Areia's family with a powerful curse. It has an ominous black shine. It can gather Lumina for a mighty cleave, and lets Areia control black thorns to both attack foes and defend allies.
I've wanted to tell you about it but never got the chance...
Regarding that fight... I'm really sorry!
Yeah. The first time we met in Umbraton...
I thought you hated my thorns so I went off.
It was my fault, but you kept apologizing to me... I'm terribly sorry.
Did you think we were fighting?
I thought it was because the thorns were hurting you,
and when I tried to remove some of them,
I couldn't, hence the apologies...
Wasn't that the case?
Anyway, that was when I found out you are actually a very nice girl.
You didn't cry or anything, so I began to see you in a completely different light.
Common Gift. Best effect when given to Umbraton Aurorians. Replica of different famous paintings. Popular in Umbraton.
Common Gift. Best effect when given to romantic Aurorians. Hand-crafted doll favored by romantics. It resembles both a rabbit and a bear. Creator unknown.
Valuable Gift. Best effect when given to Umbraton Aurorians. Only certain tycoons in Umbraton get an occasional sip of this precious libation.
Valuable Gift. Best effect when given to romantic Aurorians It's very romantic to see the beautiful array of lights inside the flask in a dim setting.
A wandering merc in Umbraton. Born with a curse that made her anemic, and must depend on her magic sword to survive.
Nickname: Midnight Thorn
Birthday: July 24
Fighting Style: Spectral Moon Sword, Black Thorn
Today's newcomer is a very capable mercenary who should be of great help to us. Even though I figured her appearance would belie her formidable skills, I never thought I'd be concerned about the mercenary... girl's physical makeup! Her body was covered in needle-like thorns, but she didn't seem to feel it at all, even trying to calm down a scared %s... She would look horrifying without that giant cloak.
As Miss Areia professed, she indeed came to help us. But aside from that, she apparently has another motive, something about a curse?
Oh, it's you. You look like you're worried about my body. It's okay, I'm perfectly fine. These thorns don't hurt. Thanks to them, I'm better than I was...
Oops, forgot to mention that I was very feeble before. Let alone this magical sword, I probably couldn't even lift a dagger.
Although I'm stronger now, my appearance does unnerve people. Luckily, I have a huge cloak to cover myself in so I don't go around spooking others. The thorns used to cut up the cloak, so I had to thicken it, but that tends to make summertime unbearable for me!
I had big health problems before... No, not the thorns, but more troublesome... like a curse.
When I was a child, unknown dark spot would appear on my skin and start to ulcerate. My parents took me to see many doctors in vain. They could only watch me grow weaker by the day.
My father then poured through the family history and found a forefather with the exact condition. My parents followed the clues and unearthed an ancestral magic sword... That's right, the very one you see! After, I gradually got better, and no more ulcerating dark spots. However, they were replaced by these thorns.
I appreciate the sword very much, but the thorns are troublesome to me. I wonder when I can live life like a normal person...
I-I had many friends, of course... Let me tell you, even though I was a bedridden child, I wasn't bored at all! There were cute sparrows, pigeons, cats, and rabbits that would come through the window to play with me, sometimes bringing a gift, like shiny rocks, lost balloons, and colorful marbles! They couldn't speak but they were my pals!
However, after the magic sword made me grow thorns, they would get hurt by them so I didn't want them to get too close. When they tried, I'd shoo them away. Yeah, I felt lonely, but it was better than hurting them...
I see you're not afraid to come near me, Navigator. Whoa, not so close, though, I don't want you to get hurt!
I'm now a freelance mercenary for Umbraton and get troublesome jobs sometimes, but I don't mind as long as I can break the curse!
Because of the effect the sword has on me, I couldn't live with my parents and had to leave home at a young age.
Oh, let me make clear it was my decision. They didn't want me to leave. But I had to, for their own well-being and eventually for a blissful reunion. To that end, I'll continue searching for a way to lift my curse!
Maybe it's destiny that I met you on the Colossus. I heard you read a lot of books and probably know a lot of things that I don't. Perhaps you can help me lift the curse for me to reunite with my family...
Any new cloak lying around? I need a big one.
Good afternoon. Got a favor to ask of you.
Thank you, Navigator...
Do you have a minute?
Uh, good afternoon, Navigator...
It's noon now.
Good afternoon, Navigator.
Do you have a minute?
There's plenty of sunlight today, but my wounds are still aching...
The sun is so warming.
Good evening, Navigator.
Hey, Navigator? Could you chat with me for a little while before bed?
Hey, Navigator... Are you asleep?
Good evening, Navigator.
I've completed... all tasks for today.
A strange tape that allows people to see things they are thinking of? How will Tessa, Sariel, and Areia face this?
Areia wants to buy a brand-new dress but hasn't been able to do so due to countless reasons. It turns out that she's even more cursed than everyone has realized...
Areia got a wondrous magical dress, but what will happen to it when the clock strikes midnight?
Umbraton is nice. It allows me to earn my living as a mercenary.
There may be more intel at the True Order but I find it fishy somehow...
As if you're being watched or something?
Eclipsites have killed many people. I hope none of you, including my parents, will run into them.
Ms. Connolly told me I'm welcome to get a coffee in her café. She said that to someone like me...
Ms. Jane refers jobs to me. She also taught me how to read mercenary contracts. I'm very grateful to her.
Actually... I like small animals a lot but I'm afraid I might injure them accidentally.
I hate my cursed body, but I can't bring myself to hate this magic sword...
Your relationship with the Colossus is kind of like mine with the magic sword, connected and symbiotic.
To me, besides wielding my sword, other activities... Oh, I'm fine with chatting, I guess.
Leave it to me. I can do anything... Eh? All I need to do is to stay here?... This is way easier than my usual job.
I was hardly coping... Sorry...
Great. We won this time.
I wish you all the best this year.
Remember to... keep your distance.
I understand. I should raise the sword.
Someday, all will end.
It's fine even if the path is filled with thorns.
13, 14, 15... Oh, I'm counting the thorns on my body. Sometimes I do this to kill time and to examine my thorns.
The power of the curse is getting stronger...
I'm lucky even though I was born with a curse. Because of the curse, I'm born to be able to walk on thorns... Um, my power is kind of related to thorns, you know.
I don't find this magic sword heavy. I've got the black thorns to share my load... Eh? How? Well, um... I don't know how to explain this to you.
The magic sword is named after the moon. It has profound power and I cannot separate myself from it, so that probably makes me profound too...
It's okay. I'll find a way to undo the curse before its powers destroy me.
The thorns are there to protect themselves. Is it the same for this thorn-covered magic sword? Why did it come with the curse and why did it... give me powers?
For what do I fight? For what am I persevering? For what did I start my journey? I ask myself these questions again and again. But the answer is simple. I just want to keep living...
Please don't touch the magic sword. I don't want you to possibly get into any trouble. Just stay away from it. I don't want you to get hurt.
I do the best I can to work alone, but it's not bad to form bonds with others like this...
I don't dare to be near you because I cherish you. I hope you can understand... I'm right here though, somewhere not too far from you.
I must cherish my cloth. After all, this is the last one... Ugh, when was it cut here?
Because of the curse, black thorns grow on me. I wish they could stop growing.
The black thorns on this magic sword can be broken off and new ones would grow out. Isn't that incredible?
It's time to work. Whom to take down? Is it too scary a subject to talk about?
Good morning. I'm quite healthy today and I can work energetically. How about you?
Don't be too concerned about work. Get some rest. Maybe everything will get better then.
It's going to get chilly at night, be careful not to catch cold... Oh, I'll be fine. I'm used to it.
Would you like to hire me? I can help with fighting and I don't ask to be highly paid... I can get rid of anything for you within reach of this magic sword.
I'll follow your lead.
Maybe some people had the same symptoms as I do a long time ago. That's probably why the ancient books and this sword have been passed on.
Cute little animals used to come to my room and play with me when I was bedridden. But they never came after I got the magic sword.
I know my parents can't be with me anymore because of the curse... But we're all looking for ways to solve it. Someday, we'll meet again.
What?... You want me to lead?
Areia curls up coyly on the sofa, her bare legs, shoes discarded to one side, and quaint dress indicating that she has just returned from a ball. Like a fairytale princess, her graceful, magical gown will disappear with the ticking of the clock, but this memory—this time spent with you—will never disappear or fade.
+One of the highest damage ceilings in the game
+% Attack buff
+Extreme multi-tile scaling
-Extremely reliant on normal attacks; hungry for powerful converters
-Theoretical ceiling does not reflect her practical use-cases
-Off-turn debuff can be dangerous at lower investment
-Poor single-tile performance
Areia is comically strong for a 5-star; it was a long-running community meme that Forest's 6-star DPSes were all worse. While units like Minos and Jeriah have started to change that, Areia is still probably the first serious end-game unit you can reasonably be expected to build. If you're new, make sure you pick her using your early game selector!
Areia's strength is a product of the AS damage formula, and how powerful Attack % is. Because Attack buffs are the only buffs that are calculated before enemy Defense, they scale significantly harder than their printed values suggest. In Areia's case, her 20-25% attack buff is closer to a 30-40% increase to final final output. The result is a free unit that is so efficient at boss-killing that every new Forest release to this day has to compete with her. However, there are a few caveats. Areia is notably worse at casual content compared to her 6-star competitors, who generally have better quality of life features. Her damage is also particularly reliant on strong conversion, as an outsized majority of it comes from landing as many normal attacks as possible.
